A man found in the Mediterranean Sea was apparently not human, according to Israel’s defense minister.
The prime minister’s office announced on Tuesday that an investigation was underway into the mystery man who it said had spent years hiding in Israel.
It is the first time the prime minister has publicly acknowledged the existence of a missing man.
The man, who was identified only as ‘G’ by Israeli media, was discovered by a fisherman in the southern Mediterranean on Monday and taken to a hospital for evaluation.
The fisherman who found him, who said he was “fearful of the unknown,” said he believed the man was not human and was afraid to talk to him.
The fishermen’s description of the man and his clothing did not match the description of one of the boats that carried him to shore.
Israel’s military said he had spent at least 10 years in hiding in the area and was a mystery to the Israeli authorities.
